The Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA) is committed to helping all animals in need, whether it be those in need of new homes or medical treatment at its low cost animal hospital. To further that mission, the PSPCA is launching a biweekly food distribution program at its Philadelphia headquarters, to help animal guardians needing some assistance in providing food for their canine and feline companions.

Boy, 15, guilty of extortion attempt
He placed a midnight call to a dog owner demanding money for returning his lost pet.

A 15-year-old boy has been convicted of making a midnight phone call to the owner of a missing dog in an attempt to extort money.

Authorities traced the call made to Bill Whiting, who had put up reward posters with his cell-phone number after his dog, Edna, disappeared in Philadelphia on Oct. 31.

About 10 days after Whiting put up posters, he received the midnight call from two boys who said they had Edna and wanted $600. Whiting said he heard the sound of dog tags and a yelping animal in the background and called police.

The hotline, 1-866-601-SPCA (1-866-601-7722), will be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week beginning January 30.Ashley Hellinger

“Animal abuse is rampant throughout Pennsylvania. We hear of dog fighting rings, dog hangings and hording in Philadelphia, but across the state, our agents receive reports such as livestock being kept in unsanitary conditions, animals not being given proper veterinary care and dogs being unlawfully tethered,” said Nelson. “Animal cruelty is not just a city issue. Our hotline will allow all Pennsylvanians to help more animals in need around the clock.”

PHILADELPHIA - A new shelter for homeless, abandoned and unwanted animals is opening in downtown Philadelphia.

It resembles a pet boutique more than a traditional shelter.

Located at Second and Arch streets in the heart of Old City, PAWS , the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society , is a division of the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Association.

PAWS hopes the city's only downtown shelter will save between 2,000 and 3,000 animals this year.

If you are thinking about taking a trip with your dog, you
may want to consult a variety of sources beforehand.

The Pennsylvania SPCA is looking for qualified volunteers who will give their time and dedication in our shelter and at events. In order to volunteer you must be at least 16 years old and attend an orientation which is held twice a month. Please call or visit www.pspca.org to get dates and times.
