Join us as we raise money to save Philadelphia's homeless, abandoned and orphaned animals at the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Receiving nearly 30,000 homeless, abandoned, and orphaned animals each year and seeing the highest volume of unwanted and unloved animals in the region, PAWS is working to end the killing of healthy and treatable pets in the City of Philadelphia.

The Mutt Strut will offer us a day of companionship and celebration, and will enable PAWS to give countless more animals the chance to experience that companionship and safety for themselves. Please give whatever you can, and consider joining us!

Cocktail Party / Fund Raiser

09/27/2008 - 7:00pm

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended for making this year’s SPDOA cocktail party a huge success. Not only did everyone have a wonderful time, but we raised over $2,500.

Your generous donations will be used to replenish wood chips, fix the gates, add enhanced lighting, and for many other important things that will make our wonderful park even better than it already is!

The dogs and I thank you!

Ashley Hellinger
SPDOA President

What to do when there’s a Dog Fight

Ok, so you’re at the park and you see two dogs about to face off. Or worse yet, a full fledge fight is underway.
What do you do? How can you minimize injuries? How can you keep the peace?

“All of a Sudden”
It’s rare for dogs to instantaneously fight. In 99% of most altercations have several ‘warm up’ arguments prior to an actual fight.
Look for repeated humping or “lean overs” - one dog placing it’s chin over another dog’s back repeatedly. As arousal levels increase, dogs that appear to be “boxing” with the back feet on the ground and the front feet off the ground, are often approaching the tipping point.

Send Your Dog Back to School at the Pennsylvania SPCA

The PSPCA Philadelphia Adoption Center Now Enrolling Students for Fall Classes

Back to school time isn’t just for kids. Whether you have a behaviorally challenged pooch that needs complete obedience training or just need help conquering a specific training challenge, the Pennsylvania SPCA’s (PSPCA’s) “Good Dog-U” obedience training program can put your dog at the head of the class.

“Each year, five-to-seven million animals are surrendered to shelters around the country,” said PSPCA Director of Training and Animal Behavior Nicole Larocco, CPDT. “Many of these animals are given up due to problems commonly resulting from a lack of training such as excessive barking, chewing, lack of housetraining or hyperactivity, all of which are generally very manageable with just a little bit of education and guidance on the part of the owner. The PSPCA’s Good Dog-U series offers a variety of programs for dogs of all ages and training levels.”
